Background On Mattresses

The mattress is a luxurious furniture piece that people sleep and lounge on for more than a third of their day.  Egyptians used these floor pillows to entertain on during daylight hours, and for resting places at night.
The presence of floor pillows in an Egyptian home was viewed as a status symbol.

Seafarers used chests as storage devices, and equipped the top with a wooden enclave.
Mattresses were created by placing bedding in this enclave.
Crewmen created hanging beds by stringing softened rope between two planks of wood and used a blanket to provide softness.

In the 1600’s, mattresses were devised of cheaply made cloth bags filled with straw and wool.
In the mid 1800’s, mattresses were made of refined cotton or quality linen and filled with materials such as wool, horse hair, and the fiber taken from coconut shells.
Mattresses were joined together in duvet fashion with buttons or looped stitching.

The first waterbed mattress came from Persia and was made of goatskins filled with water.
Other waterbeds were developed by physicians in 1873 as a treatment for bed sores.
Pocket spring mattresses were developed in 1929 by sewing coiled springs in fabric and connecting the fabric to two layers of linen.

Latex rubber mattresses were the most expensive mattresses.
The foam mattress entered the market in the 1950s and the memory foam mattress was introduced in 1992.

Ordering Mattresses Online

The internet is jam packed with online shopping sites which are exclusively dedicated to quality mattresses.
Since the net is a very competitive environment, prices are low in general and a lot of mattress shopping sites offer cheap / discounted items, free delivery, special deals and real bargains.

A typical mattress store would offer their products various sizes.
The most common sizes are twin, full, queen & king.
Another important parameter is the comfort level for the mattress.
It can be either extra firm, firm, medium, soft or cushy soft.

Things to Check Before Placing an Order:

All the stores which are listed here are credible, trustworthy & safe, however, it's still wise to look into the following points in order to avoid unnecessary headaches and disappointments.

Shipping - Does the store ship only within the US? (Many shops can't deliver furniture to Alaska & Hawaii).
Does the store ship internationally? Does it ship to APO / FPO addresses?
How do they ship? There are several methods like: UPS, truck, White Glove deliveries and others.
How long does it take to deliver?
How much does the shipping actually cost (in some cases, it's totally free of charge).
Does the shipping fee include assembly, if needed?

Warranty – Is there a clear and reasonable warranty or a guarantee policy?

Cancellations – What happens if you want to cancel your order? Is it possible? Is there an easy process for that procedure? Is there a fine for cancelling?

Returns – Can you return an item if you're not satisfied? Is there a restocking fee?

Customer Service – Is there a clear number of the customer service department in case there's a problem?

FAQ – Does the store have a detailed FAQ section which answers most common questions?

Satisfaction Guarantee – Many stores offer satisfaction / money back guarantee (always a major plus).

Lowest Price Guarantee – Some stores offer it and it's an important added value for a lot of consumers.
